Justice For Jason
Friends! Supporters! Allies against Racism and Violence!
Join us Tuesday August 3 at 5:30 pm on the steps of Northampton City Hall
Why? To celebrate the end of Jason Vassell's probation from the clutches of a racist criminal justice system; to bear witness to what a community mobilized against racist intolerance can do to effect change; to remind our elected officials, the courts, and the general public of this injustice and the powerful response such injustices bring to the surface; and to re-commit ourselves, as a community, to continue working together for a world free of hate and injustice.
August 3 marks 2 1/2 years since Jason was attacked in his on-campus residence, for being black.
August 3 marks 2 1/2 years that Jason was subjected to an unjust criminal prosecution, because of his skin color.
August 3 marks 2 1/2 years that the community has refused to back down and ignore this injustice.
August 3 marks 2 1/2 years of grassroots struggle that has proven victorious; the District Attorney has backed down and ended her case against Jason.
We will be holding a celebratory rally on the steps of the Northampton Town Hall. Refreshments will be provided. Jason, as a newly freed individual, will share words with the group on what the experience has been like for him - the toll taken on his life and what he has done to rise above the ordeal. We invite you to share with us your reflections on fighting oppression locally, as well as ongoing and future struggles for social and racial justice. Let's honor each other for the amazing work that we have all done.
This is a community victory. Let us not stop now, for we still much justice to secure in our communities.
