Stop Voter Supression Dead in It's Tracks!!

Dear Valjeanne,

We took a big step towards progress in 2008.1 But unless we vote on Tuesday with the same fire and intensity, we will lose — and lose big.

The Tea Party and their right-wing allies understand this all too well — which explains why they've been working to suppress minority votes across the country.2,3 In Houston, the Department of Justice is investigating after complaints that a Tea Party group intimidated voters.4,5 And in Wisconsin, a plot was uncovered that would have targeted Black and young voting communities with an illegal voter suppression scheme.6

This shows us just how much is at stake in this election. The fact is that these folks are trying to drastically remake our country. Right-wing candidates are already talking about the things they'd like to do if they get elected — things like undermining social security, and repealing the minimum wage and health care reform. There's even talk of impeaching President Obama.

It's up to us to stop this. Yes, these last two years have been difficult for most us, but the America we'll see if we don't vote will be even worse. Any forward momentum we've gained over the last two years will grind to a stop. That's why it's so important that you vote, and that you encourage your friends and family members to do the same.

If you have any doubt on your polling location click http://colorofchange.org/polls/

If you have friends and family who might need a nudge, please give it to them. We'll all feel a little bit better on Wednesday if we do, and the difference it will make for the next two years will be huge.

Thanks and Peace,

Don't Let Congress Kill Wolves

Republican and Democratic members of Congress in the House and Senate have introduced four bills to remove gray wolves from the endangered species list before they have fully recovered.

The bills would remove Endangered Species Act protections from wolves in Montana and Idaho, portions of surrounding states, or possibly the entire country.

The bills would legislatively overturn the August 2010 ruling in the Center's latest successful lawsuit that restored Endangered Species Act protections to wolves throughout Montana and Idaho, and parts of Washington, Oregon and Utah. Each bill would permit a renewed extermination program against wolves, unfettered by federal law.

Please tell your members of Congress: Protect our wolves, and hands off the Endangered Species Act.

Internet Censorship!

According to news reports, Google is about to cut a deal with Verizon that would end the Internet as we know it by allowing giant corporations to control what websites load quickly and easily on the Internet and dump everyone else onto an Internet slow lane.

I signed a petition urging Google to kill the deal with Verizon. Can you join me at the link below?

Victory For Wolves!

Dear Friend:

Protections have been restored for the gray wolves of the northern Rockies!

Just yesterday we learned that the Earthjustice team in Bozeman, Montana won a stunning victory for the wolves on behalf of a broad coalition of environmental groups.

On the basis of our team's expert work in court, a federal judge ruled that the wolves had been illegally stripped of their protections. Yesterday, he ordered that the northern Rockies wolves be placed back on the Endangered Species List. Because of this victory, wolf hunting in Idaho and Montana is off.

You and your fellow Earthjustice supporters and activists made this victory possible. Thanks to your support and participation in our efforts, Earthjustice has been relentless in our pursuit of justice for these wolves on the brink of recovery.

The court has sided with the law and science in this latest chapter of a conflict as old as our western settlements. But, sadly, anti-wolf sentiment runs deep in the region. And while we celebrate today, our team is preparing for the inevitable counter-attack by anti-wolf interests.

We want to see the wolves come off of the Endangered Species List—but only after they have recovered to the point where their survival is no longer in question and laws are in place to keep the population healthy. And we will not rest until they have.

Time and again, the states of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming have sought to strip legal protections for wolves. And time and again we have defeated those efforts—thanks to your ongoing support.

Together, we are making a difference. Thanks for all that you do

Justice For Jason

Friends! Supporters! Allies against Racism and Violence!

Join us Tuesday August 3 at 5:30 pm on the steps of Northampton City Hall

Why? To celebrate the end of Jason Vassell's probation from the clutches of a racist criminal justice system; to bear witness to what a community mobilized against racist intolerance can do to effect change; to remind our elected officials, the courts, and the general public of this injustice and the powerful response such injustices bring to the surface; and to re-commit ourselves, as a community, to continue working together for a world free of hate and injustice.

August 3 marks 2 1/2 years since Jason was attacked in his on-campus residence, for being black.
August 3 marks 2 1/2 years that Jason was subjected to an unjust criminal prosecution, because of his skin color.
August 3 marks 2 1/2 years that the community has refused to back down and ignore this injustice.
August 3 marks 2 1/2 years of grassroots struggle that has proven victorious; the District Attorney has backed down and ended her case against Jason.

We will be holding a celebratory rally on the steps of the Northampton Town Hall. Refreshments will be provided. Jason, as a newly freed individual, will share words with the group on what the experience has been like for him - the toll taken on his life and what he has done to rise above the ordeal. We invite you to share with us your reflections on fighting oppression locally, as well as ongoing and future struggles for social and racial justice. Let's honor each other for the amazing work that we have all done.

This is a community victory. Let us not stop now, for we still much justice to secure in our communities.

If you cannot attend the event, please consider writing a Letter-to-the-Editor of your local newspaper or donating to the Legal Defense Fund, or both! The mailing address for donations is below.

With so much love and respect,
The Committee for Justice for Jason Vassell

Let's Claim this Victory!!

Jeffers –

I’m writing to you on a great day for America.

This morning, I gathered with members of Congress, my administration, and hardworking volunteers from every part of the country to sign comprehensive health care reform into law. Thanks to the immeasurable efforts of so many, the dream of reform is now a reality.

The bill I just signed puts Americans in charge of our own health care by enacting three key changes:

It establishes the toughest patient protections in history.

It guarantees all Americans affordable health insurance options, extending coverage to 32 million who are currently uninsured.

And it reduces the cost of care — cutting over 1 trillion dollars from the federal deficit over the next two decades.

To ensure a successful, stable transition, many of these changes will phase into full effect over the next several years.

But for millions of Americans, many of the benefits of reform will begin this year — some even taking effect this afternoon. Here are just a few examples:

Small businesses will receive significant tax cuts, this year, to help them afford health coverage for all their employees.

Seniors will receive a rebate to reduce drug costs not yet covered under Medicare.

Young people will be allowed coverage under their parents’ plan until the age of 26.

Early retirees will receive help to reduce premium costs.

Children will be protected against discrimination on the basis of medical history.

Uninsured Americans with pre-existing conditions can join a special high-risk pool to get the coverage they need, starting in just 90 days.

Insured Americans will be protected from seeing their insurance revoked when they get sick, or facing restrictive annual limits on the care they receive.

All Americans will benefit from significant new investments to train primary care doctors, nurses, and public health professionals, and the creation of state-level consumer assistance programs to help all patients understand and defend our new rights.

As I’ve said many times, and as I know to be true, this astounding victory could not have been achieved without your tireless efforts.

So as we celebrate this great day, I want to invite you to add your name where it belongs: alongside mine as a co-signer of this historic legislation. Organizing for America will record the names of co-signers as a permanent commemoration of those who came together to make this moment possible — all of you who refused to give up until the dream of many generations for affordable, quality care for all Americans was finally fulfilled.

So, if you haven’t yet, please add your name as a proud health care reform co-signer today:

Please accept my thanks for your voice, for your courage, and for your indispensable partnership in the great work of creating change.

History, and I, are in your debt.

End Human Trafficking!

End Human Trafficking in the U.S.
Sponsored by: Covenant House

Human trafficking is modern-day slavery. Prevalent even in the United States, it's one of the fastest growing criminal industries in the world, and homeless youth are especially vulnerable.

Human trafficking subjects victims to violence, fraud and coercion for sexual exploitation or other forced labor. There are hundreds of thousands of victims in the U.S., including scores of foreign nationals and internally trafficked minors involved in prostitution.

Criminal operators often target homeless children, and America's streets are teaming with dangerous predators -- brutal pimps, gangs and pornographers.

These human traffickers buy and sell children, stripping them of their freedom. Pledge to help end human trafficking in the United States by learning to identify victims and report incidents.

Learn the signs. A victim often:

* Exhibits injuries, withdrawn behavior, depression and/or fear.
* Is malnourished and/or inappropriately dressed.
* Shows signs of drug addiction.
* Demonstrates a sudden change in attire, behavior, or material possessions (for example, expensive items).
* Makes references to sexual situations that are beyond age-specific norms.
* Has a "boyfriend" or "girlfriend" who is noticeably older (10+ years).
* Demonstrates an inability to attend school on a regular basis.
* Chronically runs away from home or makes references to frequent travel to other cities.
* Lacks control over their schedule and/or identification documents.

How to respond:

* In the case of an immediate emergency in the U.S., call 911. In other countries, call your local emergency access number.
* If you know kids in danger of homelessness in the U.S., encourage them to call Covenant House's Nineline at 1-800-999-9999.
* You can report suspected trafficking crimes in the U.S. by calling the Human Trafficking Resource Center at 1-888-373-7888.

Are you Serious?!

Yesterday news broke that AIG—the bailed-out insurance giant—will give out another $100 million in bonuses.1 Seriously?

These are the people who wrecked our economy. And AIG still owes taxpayers $182 billion.

Their priority should be paying us back—not giving out obscene bonuses.

But unless Congress acts—by blocking bonuses at bailed-out banks or imposing heavy taxes on them—they'll keep wasting our money. Can you sign our petition telling them that serious action to rein in bonuses is long overdue? Clicking below will add your name.

The petition says: "Bailed-out companies shouldn't be allowed to waste money on bonuses until they've paid back their debt in full."

Bankers in other countries have already gotten the message that their behavior is unacceptable. England and France have imposed heavy surtaxes on outrageous banker bonuses.2

But the banks still hold enormous power in Washington—as Sen. Dick Durbin put it, "They frankly own the place."3 And they're using all of their lobbying clout to oppose any attempts to rein in their bonuses.4

So despite the huge outcry over the last round of AIG bonuses, Congress still hasn't done anything to stop Wall Street from giving out huge bonuses. AIG's bonus plan is unacceptable. Clicking below will add your name to the petition letting Congress know they need to do something to stop it.

President Obama Keeps on Keepin On!

I just finished delivering my first State of the Union, and I wanted to send you a quick note.

We face big and difficult challenges. Change on the scale we seek does not come easily. But I will never accept second place for the United States of America.

That is why I called for a robust jobs bill without delay. It's why I proposed a small businesses tax credit, new investments in infrastructure, and pushed for climate legislation to create a clean energy economy.

It's why we're taking on big banks, reforming Wall Street, revitalizing our education system, increasing transparency -- and finishing the job on health insurance reform.

It's why I need your help -- because I am determined to fight to defend the middle class, and special interest lobbyists will go all out to fight us.

Help me show that the American people are ready to join this fight for the middle class -- add your name to a letter to Congress today:

We have finished a difficult year. We have come through a difficult decade. But we don't quit. I don't quit.

Let's seize this moment -- to start anew, to carry the dream forward, and to strengthen our union once more.

Queen Priestess of the Realms of Beyond's most excellent review!

I'm hyped about this review from one of my favorite authors: Dazjae Zoem aka "PurpleZoe" or as we of the fae world have crowned her" Queen Priestess of the Realms of Beyond"!

"The indie stream is still learning to walk in a climate of non-autonomic thinking masses, but progress is being made, thanks to POD and e-presses that are giving us the opportunity to finally choose for ourselves. Many indies are not yet as marketing-savvy, or funded as the formulaic-giants of industry, but word of mouth and interesting approaches to getting word out about new projects holds up a light in the dark for newcomers, and veterans alike that we may only now be coming to know. Sources such as Goodreads, and Shelfari are helping us discover new voices all of the time. If you’re a member of them you’ve probably heard whispers of the Immortal trilogy penned by Lady Jeffers, a weaver of post-apocalytpic peace where shapeshifting Lycans as well as underworld kinds walk. Two of the books have been released, to high acclaim—- receiving 5 stars from APOOO books is no small feat—-with the third set for release in 2010.

I recommend Immortal to appreciators of speculative literature that respects the smooth brush of spell-binding prose. Very few writers know the importance of making words dance on the page. Our shelves deserve to be fed works that do."
