Senator Edward Kennedy put it best when he said, “I have seen throughout my life how we as a people can rise to a challenge, embrace change, and renew our destiny."
It is time for us to rise to the challenge, to let our voices be heard.
This is an historic moment, one that we have all been working toward for months, some of us for years. But, we cannot simply stand by and wait. Sixty votes are needed to pass the bill out of the Senate. This promises to be much more challenging than moving health reform out of the House.
Call 1-800-828-0498 to urge your Senators to vote YES on the health reform bill.
Once you’ve placed the call click here to tell us how it went.
Now is the time, more than ever, to urge your Senators to move health reform forward. It is vital that they know their constituents stand behind them and want this bill passed.
The cost of inaction is far too great. This bill will save lives and prevent hard-working Americans from going into medical debt when they fall on hard times.
Please tell you Senators that Americans need quality, affordable health care, and we can no longer wait.
Call 1-800-828-0498 to urge your Senators to vote YES on the health reform bill.
Never in the history of health reform have we made it this far, and now is not the time to let up. Make sure you are part of the fight every step of the way. Call your Senators today and tell them to move health reform forward.

I'm outraged that the U.S. House of Representatives allowed an anti-choice measure into their landmark healthcare reform bill that would essentially eliminate insurance coverage for abortion nationwide – taking away coverage that women already have. Health reform is important, but no one should lose coverage in the new system.
I just signed a petition to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid asking him to stand strong against a similar attack in the Senate. Will you join me and add your name at http://www.StopAbortionBan.org?
Thanks for standing up for women!

Fight Fear with Facts
Last week, we asked you to help us raise $100,000 to fund our rapid response to the Republicans' never-ending scare tactics aimed at denying Americans real health insurance reform. You went above and beyond by raising a goal-shattering $147,000. On behalf of the DCCC, I can't thank you enough.
With September shaping up to be the decisive month in this fight, we can't back down. Here is a special edition of @Stake, showing some of the ways that you can help us keep up the pressure on Republicans trying to kill health insurance reform using any and all means necessary.
Fighting Fear with Facts
This week, the DCCC launched a new web video showing the twisted lengths that Republicans like Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, RNC Chair Michael Steele, and conservative commentator Glenn Beck will go to try and kill health insurance reform.
Check out our brand new video "Fighting Fear with Facts" and then forward it to five of your friends and family so we can expose their empty fear-mongering and show everyone the tactics they plan to keep using in the weeks ahead.
Text Truth to 74471 for Mobile Updates
Mobile Alerts - Fact Check Their Lies
From Sarah Palin's "death panels," to Michael Steele's shameless lies about cutting Medicare, to the RNC's outrageous claims that health care will be denied to Republican voters, to who knows what else is coming, we have to fight every single lie with the truth.
Text TRUTH to 74471 to sign up for the DCCC's mobile alerts and receive your fact-check tool kit to expose the lies and help President Obama get the real truth out about health insurance reform.
Heard Around Town - Latest Republican Outrages
Here are some of the latest and most outrageous statements by the right-wing fringe in their fight to kill health insurance reform.
Rep. Bachmann: "We have to slit our wrists, be blood brothers on this thing."
No recap of outrageous statements would be complete without a contribution by Congresswoman Michele Bachmann. Among other things, Bachmann reportedly told a right-wing fundraiser:
* "What we have to do today is make a covenant, to slit our wrists, be blood brothers on this thing. This will not pass."
* Claiming that Americans pay half their income to taxes, she said, "This is nothing more than slavery."
* And perhaps the craziest of all, Bachmann said, "Right now, we are looking at reaching down the throat and ripping the guts out of freedom."
Read more of Bachmann's out-of-control rant.
Rep. Jenkins Tells Uninsured Mom to "Go Be a Grown Up"
This week, Kansas Republican Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins seems to be engaged in a race to the bottom - with herself. Fresh off her remarks about how the Republican Party should embrace a 'great white hope' against the agenda of House Democrats and President Obama, Jenkins recently held a town hall meeting where she laughed at an uninsured single mother who was asking for a public insurance option and even told her to 'go be a grown up.' Check out the video.
With Congress returning to finish their work on health insurance reform, September will be the make-or-break month. The work we do in the weeks ahead will determine whether Americans get meaningful health insurance reform or whether the Republicans succeed in protecting the status quo.
Thank you again for shattering our August goal and for all that you're doing to expose the lies, spread the truth, and demonstrate the grassroots momentum behind health insurance reform. Stay tuned for more late-breaking news and more ways that you can help President Obama and House Democrats win this fight for the American people.

Death panels? Socialized medicine? What won't they say to stop reform?
Our opponents are stopping at nothing to block health insurance reform, even if it means shouting outright lies in the media and in their communities. We need your help to take back the conversation and put an end to their disgraceful tactics.
This August, Senators and Representatives have left Washington and are on their home turf. As you may have noticed, they're visiting local communities and holding town halls about health care reform.
Attend a town hall near you and represent the truth. Find an event by clicking the link below:
The truth is that the majority of Americans recognize the urgent need for reform and support it. Don’t let shouting from angry mobs change their minds.
We will arm you with some helpful tips on countering the false rhetoric, but we know the best reasons for health insurance reform are your own personal stories.
With your help, we can fight back with the truth. Tell your neighbors and friends what the real facts are about health care reform.

Thank you for your support.

It's getting ugly out there.
All across the country, right-wing extremists are disrupting congressional town-hall meetings with venomous attacks on President Obama's plans for health care and clean energy.
Last night in Tampa, Florida, a town hall meeting erupted into violence, with the police being called to break up fist fights and shoving matches.1
A Texas Democrat was shouted down by right-wing hecklers, many of whom admitted they didn't even live in his district.2
One North Carolina representative announced he wouldn't be holding any town-hall meetings after his office began receiving death threats.3
And in Maryland, protesters hung a Democratic congressman in effigy to oppose health-care reform.4
We've got a plan to fight back against these radical right-wingers. We've hired skilled grassroots organizers who are working with thousands of local volunteers to show Congress that ordinary Americans continue to support President Obama's agenda for change. And we're building new online tools to track events across the country and make sure MoveOn members turn out at each one.
But we need to scale up our efforts quickly to make sure this plan works. To really swing into action during this month's congressional recess, we need to raise at least $250,000 immediately. Can you chip in $35 to support our work?
If the shouts of the right-wing mobs are the only voices our senators and representatives hear over the recess, we'll have a hard time passing health care and clean energy legislation.
That's why we're launching our Heat Up Congress campaign so quickly to fight back, using new technology to implement rapid response town hall turnout, organizing personal phone calls from small business leaders and donors to their representatives, running new ads, and activating an energized network of on-the-ground organizers and volunteers.
This month could decide the future of health care and clean energy in America—and we're already one week in. If you've been sitting on the sidelines, now's the time to get involved. Talk to your neighbors, go to a town hall meeting—and today, please chip in $35 to support our work:
Thanks for all you do.

The conservative movement has made it their number one priority to stop health care reform.
They have mobilized their followers and are outnumbering us by 3 to 1 in calls to some Hill offices.
We can’t let them bully and we can’t let them win – a majority of Americans want health reform and want it now.
What you have to do is simple: call 1-800-828-0498 and ask to be connected to your Representative. Then tell us that you called, so we can make sure we are keeping up with our opponents:
As we move closer to reform, the debate will intensify. Our opponents will ratchet up their attacks in an effort to derail our progress.
We can’t let their myths get in the way of the facts: Without health care reform insurance companies will continue to deny Americans with pre-existing conditions and health care costs will continue to skyrocket. Health reform will deliver stable coverage that will always be there for you, even if you change or lose your job.
The status quo is unacceptable and unsustainable.
Take a minute to call 1-800-828-0498 and ask to speak to your Representative. If you’ve already called once, call again – let Washington know we want health care reform.
Thank you for all you’re doing to win this important fight.

Since the uninsured drive up costs for everyone, our country is paying a steep price for our failure to address this crisis-an estimated $100 billion every year. That translates into an average annual surcharge of $1017 that insured families are currently paying to subsidize the care of the uninsured. Rising health care costs are crushing the budgets of families and businesses, making us less competitive in the global economy, putting Medicare in jeopardy, and hurting our nation's long-term fiscal sustainability. Although taking action will not be easy, we simply cannot afford the cost of inaction.
It's time we fix what's broken-but we've got to do it without breaking what's already working well. On July 14th, key committees in the House of Representatives released their draft of legislation to do just that. H.R. 3200, America's Affordable Health Choices Act, would reform our nation's health care system to provide stability for American families: coverage that cannot be taken away, costs that will not threaten family finances or put insurance out of reach, and quality care that lets people choose their own doctors.
H.R. 3200 will provide:
o If you like your current plan, you can keep it.
o If you are not insured or want to change your current plan, the bill would establish a health care exchange where consumers can select from a menu of affordable, quality health care options: either a private insurance plan or a new public health insurance plan.
o People will have similar choices to what federal employees, including members of Congress, have.
o The bill will ensure that Americans of all ages have access to greater quality of care by providing better preventative and wellness care, and strengthening existing programs.
o Every child in America will have health care coverage that includes dental and vision benefits, and the legislation will ensure that more doctors and nurses are available to provide quality care as more Americans get coverage.
o Critically, the bill also will close the Medicare prescription "doughnut hole" that causes so many of our seniors to have to choose between food and their medications.
Stable, Affordable Coverage:
o Americans will have portable, secure health care plans and will no longer have to worry about losing coverage for themselves and their families if their employer drops their plan or they lose their job.
o Insurance companies will no longer be able to deny Americans based on pre-existing conditions, age, race, or gender.
o The bill will also eliminate copays for preventative care, cap patients' out-of-pocket expenses, and guarantee catastrophic coverage that protects every American from bankruptcy.
The legislation marks the first step of a commitment made by President Obama and Congress to provide stable, sustainable health care for Americans now and for the next generation. In the weeks ahead, the bill will go through many more refinements and alterations as the debate proceeds. I will continue to monitor committee deliberations and to participate actively in the discussions shaping the bill. I welcome your comments as this process moves forward..."

Palin's Resignation Leaves Wake of Wildlife Devastation: Parnell Has Opportunity to Chart New Science-Based Path
The following statement from Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund President Rodger Schlickeisen is in response to the resignation of Alaska governor, Sarah Palin:
"Governor Palin's surprise resignation comes at a crucial point for wildlife and wild places in Alaska. In the just two and a half years of her term, she has made a series of decisions that prove she had absolutely no interest in being an environmental steward of the unique natural treasure that is Alaska.
"Instead, Governor Palin ignored our nation's leading wildlife laws and filed senseless lawsuits to pursue her anti-wildlife agenda. Palin's increasingly extreme anti-wildlife management policies included shooting wolves from airplanes and helicopters, using airplanes to track black and brown bears then shooting them from the ground, and the gassing of wolf pups in their dens. She even targeted wolves that had been part of a fifteen year long scientific study conducted by the National Park Service. All this, as well as her decision to fight much needed protections for both polar bears and Cook Inlet beluga whales, shows her blatant disregard for both science and environmental laws.
"Her efforts were, and still are, a threat to the natural integrity of America's last frontier, a state that boasts many national wildlife refuges, forests, parks and other federal lands, covering more than 200 million acres of the state. And if this isn't enough, Palin's persistent denial of global warming is sure to fast make her a political relic.
"Palin's successor, Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell, must now decide whether he intends to extend Palin's devastating and destructive wildlife legacy even further, or whether he intends to chart a new path, by removing politics from wildlife management and restoring science to the decision making process. He can be sure that Defenders will be paying close attention to his decisions."
The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund (www.defendersactionfund.org) provides a powerful voice in Washington to Americans who value our conservation heritage. Through grassroots lobbying, issue advocacy and political campaigns, the Action Fund champions those laws and lawmakers that protect wildlife and wild places while working against those that do them harm.

The health reform debate is heating up — and some members of Congress are playing politics with women’s health.
Republican leaders on the Senate Finance Committee — one of the key congressional committees drafting health care reform legislation — are pressuring their colleagues on the Committee to exclude women’s reproductive health care services.
Specifically, they are demanding that health reform legislation restrict coverage of abortion services — coverage that the majority of women have right now.
At a time when our leaders should be focused on expanding health coverage and providing better quality care for all Americans, this move to take away basic benefits is unconscionable.
We can’t let this happen.
Some Senators are urging that reproductive health services be excluded, which would limit coverage many women have right now, as well as deny benefits to millions of women who would otherwise be covered under proposed health care reform legislation.
We need your help.
Women’s health care needs are not limited to reproductive health, but it is a key determinant of women’s overall health. A comprehensive health care reform plan that improves women’s access to affordable, quality health care, including comprehensive reproductive health services, is therefore essential to improving the health of women, families and communities.
>>Urge your Senators to stand up for women’s reproductive health needs in the debate over health care reform.

"It is the year of our one, 2587 ... in the great city-state of Topaz. Karla and Joseph escape from the soulless Tehotep through a mystic wormhole summoned by the Guardian Opal, and find themselves 400 years in the past. It is The Time of Legend.
Immortal II is a whirlwind of mysticism, intrigue, and horror. Its characters are deep and palatable. Its landscapes are beautiful and tragic. Valjeanne Jeffers is a master at weaving a tale that combines eroticism, metaphysics, and hard science fiction in a way that is natural and addictive.
No other piece reads like the Immortal series. The experiencer is transported to a place where one forgets that they are reading - but instead finds themselves living the characters; breathing in step with each passing page. Ms. Jeffers creates a tormented antagonist in Tehotep. A Daeman ... someone I grew to hate in book I, but almost felt sorry for in Immortal II ... almost.
Karla, a beautiful Indigo woman - her presence in the world spanning across time: her memories reaching back to her lover Joseph: a handsome copper man. His integrity and insight captures Karla's heart in a world and place beyond even the Time of Legend.
The Immortal series is a self-contained universe: complete with it's own language, history, and culture. If you dig intelligent speculative fiction seasoned with eroticism and mysticism, then run to this piece. I can't recommend Immortal II enough. And if you haven't already, treat yourself to Immortal: book I!!!!"

President Obama is trying to reform our broken health care system, which has left more than 45 million Americans uninsured and millions more with insurance that won't provide the treatment they need.
Some in Congress are with Obama. But the insurance industry, with help from Republicans and so-called centrist Democrats, is leading the charge to kill a key part of his plan -- a government-run insurance plan that would increase the number of Americans covered, called the "public option." Industry groups are spending millions -- $35 million in lobbying costs alone -- to convince people that they won't be able to choose their doctor, that government will be making their medical decisions, that they'd be forced to take the government's plan, and that the plan is part of some socialist plot -- all lies. In reality, the insurance industry is trying to protect its enormous profits on the backs of everyday people.
For Black folks, the stakes couldn't be higher: we are twice as likely as Whites to be uninsured, we have more than double the rate of infant mortality, we face more than twice the rate of diabetes-related deaths than Whites -- and the list goes on.
While the fight rages in Washington, our voices are simply not at the table. That's why I've joined ColorOfChange.org in telling Congress that every person in this country should have equal access to affordable health care, regardless of race, income, or any other factor. Will you join me? It only takes a moment:
Americans understand the idea of the public option and overwhelmingly support it -- three out of four people want the federal government to offer insurance coverage.[7,8] But powerful lobbying groups like America's Health Insurance Plans, Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers of America, and the American Medical Association -- representing the insurance industry, the drug industry, and doctors -- are doing everything in their power to maintain the status quo.
Several organizations have pushed back, including MoveOn.org -- a key partner of ours in this fight -- but it will take all of us standing up if we want to win.
A public option makes sense for the country as a whole, and it makes particularly good sense for Black folks. Many of us make too much to qualify for Medicaid but either aren't eligible for or aren't adequately covered by private, employer-based plans. Overall, 21% of Blacks are uninsured, compared to 12% of Whites.
We need a public insurance option, but that's not the only thing we should be fighting for. We need to push for equity in all aspects of our approach to health care. Every community deserves quality medical treatment, research and resources. That's not what we're getting now, and the numbers prove it:
* 22% of Black women say cost keeps them away from the doctor's office, compared to 15% of White women
* Black women have the highest rates of new AIDS cases, cancer mortality, obesity and low-weight infants of any ethnic or racial group
* There are 13.6 Black infant deaths per 1,000 live births, compared to 5.7 White infant deaths per 1,000 live births
* There are 47 Black deaths from diabetes-related illness per 100,000 people, compared to 22.5 White deaths per 100,000 people
* There are 60.1 new AIDS cases per 100,000 people among Blacks, compared to 6.7 new cases per 100,000 people among Whites
Our opportunity to address the disparities that keep too many of us from enjoying long, healthy lives is now.
Please join me in telling our lawmakers that the first step toward improving our health care system is including a public plan that makes good health something everyone can afford:

Alaska’s awful aerial wolf-killing programs have slaughtered more than 1,000 wolves since 2003 -- and at least than 251 since November. Even now…
* Governor Sarah Palin remains unrelenting in her support for aerial wolf killing;
* Newly obtained photos reveal the barbaric nature of state-managed aerial wolf killing; and
* The threat to Northern Rockies wolves in the lower 48 grows. Idaho could use aerial gunning to kill wolves on national forest lands.
Isn’t it time that Congress took action to protect our wolves from this terrible practice?
Please urge your representative to co-sponsor the Protect America’s Wildlife (PAW) Act and help end needless aerial wolf killing in Alaska and prevent its spread to the Northern Rockies where wolves have lost vital federal protections.
For weeks, my team of advocates and I have been frantically scheduling meetings with representatives like yours to convince them to pass legislation to put an end to the baseless and cruel aerial wolf killing that has already claimed so many lives and is destroying important natural balances of predators and prey.
We’ve already convinced 44 representatives to sign on as original co-sponsors of the PAW Act… but your representative has yet to act.
Will you help us convince your U.S. representative, David Price , to sign on as an original co-sponsor of this soon-to-be-reintroduced legislation?
We can’t secure the support we need for the PAW Act without your help. Please send a message to your representative today.
We don’t have much time.
California Congressman George Miller is expected to re-introduce the PAW Act in just a few weeks. To ensure the greatest chance of passing this important bill and saving the lives of wolves that will otherwise be callously gunned down, we need to convince dozens of lawmakers like Rep. Price to cosponsor the PAW Act.
Please help us save wolves. Take action today.
Robert Dewey Robert Dewey

P.S. Messages from caring people like you are the single most important tool we have to stop aerial wolf killing. Please send your message today, and we will be sure to remind Rep. Price about your message when we meet with your Representative in the days and weeks ahead.

We’ve seen appalling new images of Governor Sarah Palin’s cruel war on wolves -- pictures Palin would never want seen on a postcard from Alaska:
* Wolf carcasses skinned and stacked in piles in the woods;
* Dead wolves riddled with buckshot and lying bloody in the snow;
* Sarah Palin’s hired killers smiling and posing in front of an airplane loaded down with recently slaughtered wolves.
You can help expose Palin’s brutal, senseless killing of Alaska’s wolves.Your contribution of $25.00, $50.00, $100.00 or another amount will help Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund keep the national spotlight on Palin’s barbarism, lobby for federal legislation to end this awful wolf killing program and protect wolves and other imperiled wildlife.
On June 6th, we have a unique chance to reach more citizens and media about the Palin carnage. She is scheduled to be in Auburn, New York to celebrate 50 years of Alaska statehood and New Yorker William Seward’s 1867 purchase of Alaska -- a purchase then known as “Seward’s Folly.”
With your donation, we’ll make sure that more caring people learn the truth about Sarah’s Palin’s own folly -- an expensive, unscientific and horrific wolf-killing program that has already massacred more than 1,000 wolves.
To place the next round of Eye on Palin television ads in this New York market, we need to raise $75,000 by next Monday (June 1st). Can you send what you can afford?
The gruesome images described above are just the tip of the iceberg.
After Palin's henchmen executed 14 poor pups last summer -- with a shot each to the head -- and more than 250 wolves were killed during the recently concluded 2008/2009 aerial gunning season, Palin's administration is resorting to even more extreme tactics to kill wolves.
This summer, poison gas bombs will be thrown into dens and snares will be set at the mouths of dens to kill off newborn pups and to prevent wolf numbers from increasing.
Extreme wolf-killing programs like these are already having a devastating effect on wolf populations. Wolf population estimates indicate that almost all of the wolves in the Upper Yukon/Tanana predator control region (near the Yukon Charlie Rivers National Wildlife Preserve) may have been killed over the winter, with 133 wolves killed by aerial gunning and another 80 expected to be trapped.
Don’t let Palin and her trophy hunting cronies get away with it. Please donate now to help save the lives of wolves targeted by Palin’s brutal programs.
Besides keeping the media heat on Palin, your compassionate contribution will build momentum for passage of federal legislation to end her aerial wolf-killing programs an effort that has already garnered more than 30 original co-sponsors for the Protect America’s Wildlife (PAW) Act.
With your caring support, we will end this cruelty. Please donate now.

After savoring the latest issue of PurpleMag, #7, I decided to examine the feelings that crept over me while reading. Was it elation that I, Valjeanne Jeffers, was featured in a magazine I so thoroughly admire? Oh, most definitely.
As I read the interview with science fiction author Cailloux Williams, the poetry of Min, an article exposing forced human drug trials, a review of Zuda’s acclaimed comic Bayou , not to mention the writings of Queen Zoe herself… I couldn’t help but think: “Here are my offerings, nestled alongside them!”
But there’s more to it that that. I’d sat down angry over the awful haircut my last barber gave me (not my regular guy) worried about traffic tickets, and wondering how best to sever ties with an obnoxious boss.
Then I started to read and a calm stole over me. I paid special attention to the directions for weeding psyche baggage; mentally book-marked a regime for organic dental cleansing. And I found myself imagining just how delicious a recipe for “green ice cream” would taste. All this and more is depicted against an amazing backdrop of sketches, paintings and photography.
So I decided to write an impromptu review. And, tweaking a remedy from Sister's Zoe’s pages, list the purple adjectives that always describe her Mag: delectable, lush, informative, sexy, outrageous, magical, nonconformist, indie. Enjoy!

Please watch our new video featuring Ashley Judd, and then email Governor Palin and urge her to stop her unnecessary, unscientific aerial wolf killing program.
Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund's Eye on Palin campaign exposes Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s anti-conservation agenda as she seeks the national stage.
Our new website, eyeonpalin.org, features Ashley Judd's powerful video on Governor Palin’s cruel aerial wolf killing program that has already been viewed more than 180,000 times on YouTube.
Last fall, Ms. Judd helped us expose Governor Palin’s efforts to eliminate vital federal protections for America’s struggling polar bears. Now, as Governor Palin expands the barbaric aerial slaughter of wolves, Ms. Judd is speaking out once again.
"I am outraged by Sarah Palin's promotion of this cruel, unscientific and senseless practice which has no place in modern America," she said to me. “I am proud to be a part of Defenders Action Fund’s efforts to stop it.”
Watch Ashley Judd’s new video and please take action today. Governor Palin needs to know that caring people like you from across the nation find her cruel aerial wolf slaughter appalling.
Governor Palin is doing all she can to grab the national stage. With your help, we can put the national spotlight on her senseless killing of animals and educate more Americans about the real Sarah Palin

These adorable wolf pups will be featured on our next calendar and seen in more than 1 million homes, offices, classrooms, break rooms and other public areas. The calendar will serve as a powerful reminder to people all across America of the importance of protecting wolves and other amazing animals. Thank you!
Make sure you get your Defenders of Wildlife calendar. Join Defenders of Wildlife today!
In the last three weeks alone, donations from caring people like you have enabled Defenders of Wildlife to…
*Launch emergency legal efforts in state court to stop Governor Sarah Palin’s helicopter assault on wolves near the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve, near the area made famous by the 1890s Alaska Gold Rush. In just five days her hired gunmen killed 84 wolves. Ironically, the state ended its helicopter attacks just one day after we went to court.
*Mobilize wildlife supporters to stop a senseless slaughter of Yellowstone’s famous wild bison. Defenders activists in Montana helped stop a bill in the state legislature that would have consigned more than 100 wild bison to their deaths.
*Fight reckless fishing practices that kill threatened and endangered sea turtles. Contributions from concerned people like you helped us generate almost 50,000 comments to the National Marine Fisheries Service against deadly bottom longline fishing in the Gulf of Mexico.
… And that’s just a few of the efforts made possible by caring people like you. Please join Defenders of Wildlife today and help us make a difference for wolves and other wildlife.

Today, I signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act into law.
This is a historic step -- the first of many as we work together to climb out of this crisis -- and I want to thank you for your resolve and your support.
You organized thousands of house meetings. You shared your ideas and personal stories. And you informed your friends and neighbors about the need for immediate action. You continue to be a powerful voice for change throughout the country.
The recovery plan will create or save 3.5 million jobs, provide tax cuts for working and middle-class families, and invest in health care and clean energy.
It's a bold plan to address a huge problem, and it will require my vigilance and yours to make sure it's done right.
I've assigned a team of managers to oversee the implementation of the recovery act. We are committed to making sure no dollar is wasted. But accountability begins with you.
That's why my administration has created Recovery.gov, a new website where citizens can track every dollar spent and every job created. We'll invite you and your neighbors to weigh in with comments and questions.
Our progress will also be measured by the tens of thousands of personal stories submitted by people who are struggling to make ends meet. If you haven't already, you can read stories from families all across the country:
Your stories are the heart of this recovery plan, and that's what I'll focus on every day as President.
With your continued support, we'll emerge a stronger and more prosperous nation.
President Barack Obama

In the Congo, rape is used as a weapon. It destroys families and communities. These women are often disowned by their husbands and families. They have been subjected to countless horrors and inconceivable violence.
My attention was drawn to this problem and to the Panzi Hospital by an article in the September 2007 issue of Glamour magazine. I cried when I read the article and when I pursued further reading and information online. I decided that I wanted others to know. This cause needs to be addressed and Facebook is a quick and simple way to spread the news.
Please invite anyone to this group that you think cares and would like to help. My goal is to inspire others to donate to the hospital or write to the appropriate authorities. I welcome any suggestions as I am relatively new to this.

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia (CNN) — President Barack Obama said Thursday that “the scale and the scope” of his economic plan is right, turning up the heat on critics he said were hawking “phony arguments” and “false theories of the past” to chip away at the bill’s programs.
President Obama said if a stimulus bill isn’t passed the economy will continue to get worse.
“Don’t come to the table with the same tired arguments and worn ideas that helped to create this crisis,” the president said at the House Democrats’ annual retreat in Williamsburg.
“We’re not going to get relief by turning back to the very same policies that, for the last eight years, doubled the national debt and threw our economy into a tailspin,” he said. “We can’t embrace the losing formula that says only tax cuts will work for every problem we face, that ignores critical challenges like our addiction to foreign oil, or the soaring cost of health care, or failing schools and crumbling bridges and roads and levees.
“I don’t care whether you’re driving a hybrid or an SUV — if you’re headed for a cliff, you’ve got to change direction.”
The Democrats welcomed the president with frequent interruptions for applause as he took on criticisms of the bill.
Obama said he valued “the constructive criticism and healthy debate that’s taking place around this package,” but added that speedy passage of the bill was essential.
“We’re not moving quickly because we’re trying to jam something down people’s throats,” he said. “We’re moving quickly because if we don’t, the economy’s going to keep getting worse.”
Obama rejected calls for more tax cuts and significant slashing of the bill’s more than $800 billion price tag, and said complaints the package was a spending bill rather than a stimulus bill were off base.
“What do you think a stimulus bill is?” he said. “That’s the point.”
To critics who argue that the government shouldn’t be spending billions with a large and growing deficit, Obama said, “I found this national debt doubled, wrapped in a big bow waiting for me as I stepped into the Oval Office.”
The American people called for change in November, he said, “and that’s what we’re going to deliver.”
“They did not send us here to get bogged down with the same old delay, the same old distractions, the same talking points, the same cable chatter,” he said. “They did not vote for the false theories of the past, and they didn’t vote for phony arguments and petty politics, and they did not vote for the status quo.”
Obama told his fellow Democrats that they have “the capacity to do great things” on behalf of the American people, “but we are going to have to do it by not thinking about ourselves.”
“It starts with this economic recovery plan,” he said. “And soon, we will take on big issues like addressing the foreclosure problem, passing a budget, tackling our fiscal problems, fixing our financial regulation and securing our country.”
But, he stressed, the battle over the stimulus bill is not “an abstract debate.”
“If we do not move swiftly to sign [the act] into law, an economy that is already in crisis will be faced with catastrophe,” he said. “This is not my assessment. This is not Nancy Pelosi’s assessment. This is the assessment of the best economists in the country. This is the assessment of some of the former advisers of some of the same folks who are making these criticisms right now.”
“This is not a game,” he said. “This is not a contest for who’s in power and who’s up and who’s down.”
It’s time, he said, to “set aside the gamesmanship in this town and get something done.”

Mainstream media has been described as one of the most widespread tools of social control. Through films,TV, music and videos we learn what to eat and what to hope for; where to live, what to desire and what to dream. Mainstream media impacts these values in such subtle ways that it's downright scary. From day to day, hour to hour we are ingesting them -- values racism, sexism, classism and we're not even aware of it.
As Meehan, author of Ladies of the Evening found that some of the roles models we see on TV we ignore. Not many of us, for example, want to learn how to be a prostitute. But many other fantasy characters we see are parents, neighbors and lovers and these we do pay attention too.
People learn how to behave from television and film roles models just as they emulate real ones. Research has even shown that we can take on the attitudes, ideas etc from popular culture's portrayal of our group (e.g. Black women) then go on to make assumptions about how we think other groups might behave (e.g. Black men)! Many are afraid to disagree with these stereotypes because they're afraid of being laughed at or called an outsider -- so they spread in what has been called a spiral of silence (Price, 1989).
If all of this sounds like science fiction consider the OJ Simpson trial: the defendant in question a Black male celebrity and former pro football star accused of murdering his white wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her male friend, Ron Goldman. Psychologists Friedland and Potash commented that we, as a culture, looked upon OJ as fallen hero and that we were both betrayed and stunned.
And the media's gory coverage of Simpson trial, including the manipulation of Blacks and Whites into opposing boxing corners, makes one wonder just who and what was being tried? Simpson's guilt or innocence or a man's right to own and abuse his property -- his property in this case being Nicole, especially since he was paying the bills? (As a case in point I talked several white men who swore that he was innocent!) Or perhaps the millions of Black folk who've been screwed by the judicial system were on trial and Nicole and Ron were sacrificed to their collective rage?
Hallis has described TV News as an ideological medium: providing not just information and entertainment but pockets of consciousness -- clues for reacting to social and political reality. (From Bell Hooks Yearning. ). I couldn't agree more.

This is from a book entitled The Story of Eve which I finished in 1997 and never published. Much of the research is, I admit, dated; but I'm astounded at how much of it still applies to how we view and ingest media. Anyway I've been threatening to post some of it for months so here goes:) Comments and critiques are welcomed:)

Mainstream media is possibly the most fascinating of social entities. It is a paradox -- a riddle -- that keeps one searching for answers. This is because popular culture, films, TV, music, reflect and encourage cultural change or slow it down to crawl.
Another thing about the media is that it creates a contextual dialogue: an ongoing conversation between past and present events. Popular music is nothing if not dialogic, the product of an ongoing conversation in which no one ever has the first or the last word (Tricia Rose /Black Noise/1994). The most ready example of this are Rap music artists who dub over older melodies so that you actually have one musician "speaking" to another.
History repeats itself and thus so does the media.
But what has all of this to do with a backlash -- and just what is a backlash anyway? The backlash against women is an attack on women's rights -- and by extension everyone's rights -- by conservatives. Conservatives seek to keep women oppressed by reversing the femisnist gains that began during the 1970s.
And how is this attack being mounted? Well there many literati who maintain that cultural stereotypes or mythology are the food of conservative politics. Current myths such as "women can't raise children alone (especially males)" have actually been around for centuries and are recycled from one decade to the next. Thus though much hubbub was made over the 1980s-1990s backlash against women there have actually been 3 (4 if you count the last 8 years) during 3 distinct historical periods: the 1930s, 1950s and finally the 1980s-90s.
To illustrate what I mean lets look at some current issues. Women's reproductive health is a current issue. Or is it? Anybody ever hear of Roe vs Wade? And did you know that women have been fighting this battle since the 19th century? The man is the proper head of the home. Is he now? I thought we thrashed this one out during the 1970s. Well Americans during the turn of the century thought so too.

And isn't this the case in popular films where the "whore" is blown up, stabbed, choked etc? Germaine to this myth, feminists are whores.

The myth of woman as bitch-goddess or as virgin-whore is both sexist and racist. Thus is distorts the image of God so that He is perceived as racist and sexist. At this mythology's core is the oppression of all. And according to it, if a woman is a virgin, she is the chattel of man an she nurtures him. She has no sexual desires, or if she does, man controls them. She is passive and poses no threat to him. She and only she, mythic goddess, is worthy of becoming wife and mother. (This is part of the reasoning behind the anti-abortion movement. In the minds of conservatives women's bodies belong to men. So if a woman becomes pregnant, she has to give birth whether she wants to or not.
To be continued...
